Il pensiero di Roberto Ardigò, nato a Casteldidone nel 1828 e morto a Mantova nel 1920, ha segnato una tappa decisiva della storia del pensiero italiano, e occidentale in genere. Ardigò, infatti, ha svecchiato la cultura filosofica aprendola al contributo delle scienze, ha ricollocato al centro della riflessione la Natura, ha rivoluzionato la riflessione etica, giuridica e sociologica. Nella sua vicenda umana assistiamo inoltre al passaggio dalle convinzioni tradizionali a una fiduciosa apertura al progresso. Una figura e un pensiero rivoluzionari, i suoi, che vale la pena di riscoprire e di studiare con attenzione, per meglio prepararci alle sfide del terzo millennio. La presente opera, redatta in occasione del centenario della morte del filosofo da Alberto Jori, professore di filosofia nell’Università di Tubinga, in Germania, e di storia della filosofia antica nell’Università di Ferrara, vuol essere un’introduzione al suo pensiero e, soprattutto, un invito alla lettura dei suoi testi, qui proposti in una vasta sezione antologica. ...

In the Shadow of God tells us the story of the vicissitudes of Christian reflection in its confrontation with Greek-Roman philosophy: a confrontation thanks to which Christianity developed new conceptual categories appropriate to its message of salvation. It is a speculative itinerary starting from the Gospels and ending with the dissolution of medieval Scholasticism; it spans 14 centuries, which are among the most interesting and fruitful in European culture. The author of this book, a well-known Italian philosopher and historian of philosophy, professor at the University of Tubingen, shows that the definition of “Christian philosophy” reserved for this phase of Western culture, is fully justified. In fact, it was Christian faith that then pushed theologians and philosophers to try to explain the contents of religion with the resources of reason. The Genesis of the ‘Übermensch’ is a very useful and inspiring history of modern German philosophy. The book is as lucid as Alberto Jori, a well-known Italian philosopher, professor at the University of Tubingen (Germany), can make it. The object of the work is the development of German philosophy from the last decades of the eighteenth century, and in particular from Kant, to Nietzsche, that is to the end of the nineteenth century. Within just over a century, a prodigious and almost frenetic speculative process took place in Germany, the fulcrum of which was the attempt to build a new metaphysics, which could ensure, in its framework, the ontological foundation of man’s freedom. From the Kantian noumenon to the various forms of German Idealism, to arrive — through Schopenhauer, Marx, and Kierkegaard — up to the Nietzschean Übermensch, all the thinkers who are examined in this book sought to guarantee the self-determination of man, and his superiority over nature, by resorting to new ontological-metaphysical categories. According to the author, the balance of these daring speculative experiments is, on the whole, bankrupt. In other words, classical metaphysics — the one initiated by Plato and Aristotle — has not been superseded by these thinkers, but has instead shown its own validity and vitality through its ability to resist their criticisms and, at the same time, to renew itself. The character of The Genesis of the ‘Ubermensch’ is therefore not only historical-philosophical, but also theoretical. At the same time, the author aims to transmit a clear and non-dispersive vision of the whole speculative itinerary examined. ...
